Talladega College is to be the only HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to accept the invitation to march in the parade. Many Americans took to social media to voice their opinions. One family went as far as to return their parents Honorary Doctoral degrees to the school because of their disappointment in Talladega's decision to march in the parade. My daughter and her band mates were called names and made to feel, pretty much, less than human. I must admit, I am so proud of Alyanna for the way that she handled the situation. It's hard to take opposition full on and not buckle under the pressure. My husband and I met in band class over 20 years ago. I played the Tenor Saxophone and he played the Trumpet. Of all our children, Alyanna was the only one that stayed in band and ultimately earned a scholarship to school through her music skills. Derrick and I are band geeks at heart and absolutely LOVE watching her march with her band mates. The band started a Go Fund Me page to raise the 75K dollars they needed to cover the trip. Within a few short days, they had raised over 600k!! Over 11,000 people donated to help send them to the Inaugural Parade.
